USEFUL BOOKS FOR JEE AND NEET PREPARATION

BEST books for JEE and NEET preparation.

  • Which books are best for JEE/NEET?
  • Which books to buy for reading theory ,solving problems?
  • Which reference book is better and up to the level of exam?

These are some of the questions frequently asked by JEE and NEET aspirants. So, let’s try to answer them.

Books and solving materials play a vital role in the preparation of any competitive exams. Choosing these wisely is a pre requisite to start your journey. None of the book is so called bad or worsen, but some of these books are not up to the mark for exam preparations.

Some books have enormous irrelevant information, theory and questions, not as per the exam syllabus and pattern. While some of them do not have level up to the difficulty level and questions being asked in exam. So, choosing a book wisely is important which can provide you the exact taste of questions to be asked in the exams.

So, here in this post I will try to give my point of views on the preparation materials as per my experience during the two years journey.

[These books are used by me and provided me the satisfactory result. So, you can try them if you are are confused too in the selection of books]

So Let's start.

PHYSICS:

1. NCERT TEXT BOOKS: The books prescribed by NCERT are a must to do thing for every aspirant  whether he/she is preparing for JEE, NEET, Boards or any other exam. NCERT books provides you a course structure overview and also PHYSICS NCERT have some great problems in its back exercises. Questions of certain theoretical chapters like communication, semiconductors, physical world, etc. are directly asked in JEE MAINS and NEET from NCERT content.
If time is a constraint so avoid reading theories of all chapters (however reading it can make you conceptually stronger), but try to solve back exercise problems at least. (especially JEE Aspirants).

2.  Concept of Physics- By H.C.VERMA: Physics book being used by competitive exams aspirants from years. Theory is  not much elaborated (but up to a level that will make you think of physics in  practical life. Illustrations, solved examples, objective questions, exercises provided are really brain evoking. The difficulty level in these problems increases gradually, starting from scratch and reaching to some really great problems.
JEE ASPIRANTS should try to follow it completely. However, NEET aspirants can skip the difficult level problems.
However, sometimes it can have same type of questions (same concept) with rigorous calculations.

3. PHYSICS GALAXY: The five books under the complete set of physics galaxy physics books are really helpful asset for anyone who has a keen interest in having complete conceptual understanding of physics and also helpful for preparation of competitive exams. These books are just like a teacher explaining in class room. Also a lot of  solved illustrations, theoretical questions and numerical exercises make it a perfect and complete guide for exam preparation.
The author of book Mr. Ashish Arora has himself mentored a lot of JEE, NEET, Olympiad top  rankers in offline classes and also produced a large no. of selections in these competitive exams. You can also refer his Youtube channel for concept clarification and illustrations.

You may also refer Cengage publication and D.C. Pandey Sir books as a complete theory-cum-practice material, but I have no personal experience  about these books. So, I have not mentioned about them.

IMPORTANT BOOKS FOR JEE ASPIRANTS:
  • Problems in General Physics -By I.E. IRODOV [only if you have a lot of time and want to built your calculus based skills required in solving Physics problems] - For JEE ADVANCED ASPIRANTS.
  • POV: This book is much overrated among JEE aspirants.

  • 700+ Advanced Illustrations- By Ashish Arora: A complete advanced level problem set to evoke your brain and to develop out of the box thinking. Helpful to solve in the gap between JEE MAINS and JEE ADVANCED examination.

 IMPORTANT BOOKS FOR NEET ASPIRANTS:
  • S.L. ARORA [Dhanpat Rai Publication]: Reference book for Boards but contain satisfactorily good and easy explanations of many topics. Also the no. of questions comparable to NEET paper level are in a good no. Thus, it can be a good guide for you to understand concept and practice basic problems being asked in exam.

  • NCERT Fingertips [MTG]: Preferred by many of top rankers and good scorers in NEET. Helpful for practicing MCQ problems based on every chapter separately.

  • CHEMISTRY:
1. NCERT TEXTBOOKS:  NCERT books are most relevant for chemistry, both for NEET and JEE aspirants. Inorganic chemistry section with its wide and much diverse syllabus is being directly asked from NCERT mostly, in all competitive exams including NEET, JEE MAINS as well as JEE ADVANCED. Questions are directly framed from lines of NCERT textbook.  Also for physical and organic chemistry NCERT theory reading and questions are of great importance.

NOTE: Chapters like p-block, metallurgy, environmental chemistry, chemistry in everyday life, polymers, etc. have questions asked directly from NCERT.

2. N.AWASTHI : A good problem book for mastering numerical problems in physical chemistry. The book contains questions from basic level to advanced level (including single correct, multiple correct, integer type, match the following, numerical type questions) thus is a much better book to take for anyone aspiring for any of the exam. The book is present in both JEE as well as NEET edition for respective aspirants.
Solving the book make your calculations and accuracy of solving a much way better, and provides you  better exposure to variety of problems that can be framed within a chapter.

3. M.S. Chauhan: A good theory book for organic chemistry and its deep analysis. Also problems are given in the book are good for practice.
Sometimes, contain  a lot more of extra stuff  about certain topic. So, study selectively from it.
I actually not read the book much since I have covered most of my organic chemistry from online stuffs and solving PYQs and other extra questions.

Some other books generally preferred by others (for JEE preparation) are :
[NOTE: Even NEET aspirants can follow for complete understanding of theory of certain topics, if time permits.]

O.P. Tandon for Organic chemistry, J.D. LEE for inorganic chemistry, P.W. Atkins for physical chemistry. You can research and check for them too, but in my opinion, these books contain a lot more content required than JEE/NEET syllabus. So you can refer these books for certain topic understanding but reading completely is not required and infact a time kill.

NOTE:  After all in chemistry I would recommend everyone to be thorough through your NCERT textbook completely. Do revise the inorganic chemistry frequently, since it becomes the most difficult tasks to do at the last (at least for me). Solve PYQs for having a good taste of level of questions and then follow accordingly. However the books mentioned above can also be a better choice to have.

  • MATHEMATICS:
1- NCERT TEXTBOOKS: Just a minimum or base line for course overview. Questions are literally straightforward and easy without much complex calculation or mathematical manipulations involved. Just to revise simple theory on each chapter. Contain only few good level questions in each chapter in back exercises.
Helpful to start for a beginner to boost confidence.

Personal Opinion:
Don't rely completely on mathematics NCERT, most of the questions here are not comparable to JEE Mains or Advanced.  But I strongly suggest each of you to solve the NCERT once, as it would not only help you in boards preparation but get you a taste of more variety of questions (however easy and straightforward but each question will develop your thinking capacity and will teach you something new)

2- CENGAGE SERIES: The Cengage Mathematics series for JEE preparation consist of a set of five books namely, Algebra, Calculus, Coordinate geometry, Vector and 3-d, Trigonometry.
The book set is in itself is a complete mathematics course to be followed for scoring good in both JEE Mains and Advanced. The book comprises of sufficient theory, examples and many questions for practice in back exercise. The back exercise questions are of every different type of questions that are being asked in JEE Advanced (single correct, multiple correct, match the column, integer type, etc.). These back exercise problems are given with their complete solution at the back of book, so the book is complete within it.

3 - ARIHANT SERIES: The ARIHANT publication series for JEE is also divided into various parts.  In these books each chapter is divided into small sections. Sufficient theory, examples are given under each section with some practice problems. At the end of each chapter, back exercises with questions ranging from JEE Mains to Advanced are given along with some PYQs of JEE. Similar to as Cengage series, here also different types of questions are framed with some conceptually much better ones that makes you to evolve your thinking.

Both the Cengage and Arihant publication series are individually complete package for JEE Mathematics. You can refer any of the two series.
I personally followed Cengage for Algebra and Calculus, Arihant for Vector and 3-d geometry, Trigonometry and Algebra. Both the series are best, you can follow any of these.

You may also refer book of other writers like S.L.Loney, A.Das Gupta, etc. too.

ADDITIONAL BOOKS FOR MATHEMATICS:

1- BLACK BOOK: This book of Balaji Publication, with the renowned name as black book is one of the most popular mathematics book in JEE domain. The book consist of good questions for JEE ADVANCED of different types of questions being asked. The book is perfect for solving purpose. Once you have finished the basic theory books for JEE, you can move on to Black Book for more practice of some good questions of the level of JEE Advanced.

NOTE:
Do not directly jump on to it, without solving theory book. This book is recommended only once you have completed your and require more practice questions for JEE ADVANCED.

2-R.D.SHARMA OBJECTIVE: If you are initially struggling with tough questions of JEE ADVANCED given in theory books, you can switch to R.D. Sharma objective questions book first to get a better compatibility with single correct questions being asked in JEE Mains. The book comprises of some easy but some good level problems for enhancing one's problem solving skill and getting out of  fear of mathematics.
Start with theory, solve R.D. Sharma objective to get a better hand over the problem solving skill and then following ADVANCED type questions.

NOTE:  Better for JEE Mains (for some extent ADVANCED too) but not compulsory to solve. Only for those who require a bunch of practice problems for JEE MAINS mathematics to get a good command on calculation and application of theory.
If you are going good with some theory book, then go on and follow it.

  • BIOLOGY: Biology is the heart of NEET or any other medical exam. Biology constitute the major portion of NEET with a weightage of half of the total.
Scoring in biology is considered to be relatively easy by most of NEET ASPIRANTS. Many aspirants touch even a full on full score in biology section.
Biology is all about a test of remembering power, rarely few logical questions are framed of it.
So, it becomes easy for one to g, et a good score, if he/she has a good remembrance power and a good conceptual clarity about the subject.

1. NCERT TEXT BOOKS: Literally, this is the only set of book you have to follow for a perfect score in NEET biology section. All the questions are directly being asked from NCERT lines. One who has revised and remembered the complete 11th and 12th NCERT multiple times would surely score a good score in biology. The questions asked in NEET nowadays are directly framed from NCERT, there is almost no question out of NCERT textbook. So, just blindly follow NCERT, remember each line, diagram, table, charts given in book. However for conceptual clarity and better understanding of statements given in NCERT you may follow any trustworthy reference book or online source because concepts are more retained in mind, than the things that are being mugged up.

2. NCERT BIOLOGY FINGERTIPS:
This book by MTG publication is a good way to analyse that whatever you have studied is retained in your mind or not.
The book comprises of chapters of both 11th and 12th, with some short notes of every chapter and then a lot of problems (MCQs) on each topic of chapter. The book helps in practicing questions, and is also a useful asset since it helps one to test his/her preparation and get alignment on how questions are being framed.
The book also contain some (not much - 10% only) additional information and out of NCERT questions. You can study and go through them if you are interested, but their is no need to worry for them for NEET examination (keeping the present scenario of NEET in mind).

You can prefer any of the book for questions practice, but remember that the book should follow NCERT textbook. There should not be much of additional information as grasping it can confuse you and might waste your crucial time. So, choose book consciously.

3. SHORT NOTES: You should prepare your short notes aligned with NCERT as it will surely help you to revise faster at the last time of exam. Short Notes making also help you to remember the facts faster than just reading.
During the last time for exam, having short notes is just like a edge for one over others. Make short notes efficiently, do not try to copy complete book, but include all important facts that can be asked.

Ultimately the bottom-line for NEET biology preparation is:
  • Study NCERT Understand concept by reference book/ online source  Make short notes  Solve questions Revise short notes and NCERT periodically Score good.
So, these are some of the books that I have followed during my JEE and NEET preparation and got a satisfactorily good result in both. So you may take suggestions and ideas from here and decide yourself the book you need as per your requirement. Remember don't go for multiple books, choose one and stick over it.
"Solving one book multiple times is more beneficial then, solving multiple books not even single time"
